COLLIES AND KIDS:   Perfect Together

by Ann Boles of Breakaway Collies

Published in Collie Expressions Magazine - April / May 2009

"Outside of the maternity floor, hospitals are usually not a fun place to be.   If you find yourself in a hospital, it most likely will be an extremely stressful experience, and for a child it's all that and more.
Hospitals and doctors can fix your pain, cure your ills, and tend to your physical ailments, but they need some help to soothe the soul.  That's where the Collie comes in.  What child can resist the soft look, warm eyes, and the fluffy cuddly coat of a Collie?
Therapy dogs bring to the hospital a sense of normalcy to an otherwise chaotic situation.  They interrupt a stressful day and divert that time to a much more pleasant experience.
After a few visits, your dog will develop a following.  Both staff and patients start looking forward to your arrival, and will plan their day to ensure they get to visit.  The bond and friendship your Collie will develop with patients and staff will be amazing.
CH. Riverrun's Jump for Joy, or "Jump" as she is affectionately known, is our very special therapy dog.  Jump visits a children's hospital in New Jersey every Thursday for several hours and is on call for anyone who may need a special visit.  Jump visits five floors at the children's hospital, but spends most of her time on the oncology floor.  Many of the children are there long-term and Jump has formed a special bond with many of them.  Pictured is Jump with her best friend Emily Aleida.

P.S. - A very serious side effect will most likely overwhelm you.  You will have a much clearer perspective of life and know your Collie has made one kid's life a little bit better."

Julie Farrell - Pet Therapy Volunteer

The Collie Club of America Shining star is proud to announce that

twelve collies were accepted into the program for 2011 of which

one was Julie Farrell.   In order to become a Shining Star
a dog has to exemplify both the depth and breadth

of the breed's character and a deep and abiding relationship

with human partners in the performance of service

to community and family. Collies are outstanding

therapy dogs, education dogs

and service dogs. With their love, generosity and wisdom,

they can take themselves beyond their training.

With their natural empathy and tendency

to think so well on the fly,

Collies often take their service to whole new levels.

During the first year of Shining Star

we have seen these wonderful dogs raise the bar

over and over again and the 2011 dogs have expanded

this vision even further.

Recently, Cub Scout Den 4 in Wood-Ridge received a
very important visitor at a recent meeting.

Julie, the collie, is a trained therapy dog that has gone through

extensive testing and training to do her job

as a visitor to the ill at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Julie's owner, Mary, explained the ways of approaching dogs

and also explained the love Julie brings to those

when they need it most.
